A global collisionless PIC code in magnetic coordinates

چکیده
A global plasma turbulence simulation code, ORB5, is presented. It solves the gyrokinetic electrostatic equations including zonal flows in axisymmetric magnetic geometry. The present version of the code assumes a Boltzmann electron response on magnetic surfaces. It uses a Particle-In-Cell (PIC), δf scheme, 3D cubic B-splines finite elements for the field solver and several numerical noise reduction techniques. A particular feature is the use of straight-field-line magnetic coordinates and a field-aligned Fourier filtering technique that dramatically improves the performance of the code in terms of both the numerical noise reduction and the maximum time step allowed. Another feature is the capability to treat arbitrary axisymmetric ideal MHD equilibrium configurations. The code is heavily parallelized, with scalability demonstrated up to 4096 processors and 109 marker particles. Various numerical convergence tests are performed. The code is validated against an analytical theory of zonal flow residual, geodesic acoustic oscillations and damping, and against other codes for a selection of linear and nonlinear tests.

Electron collection by a negatively charged sphere in a collisionless magnetoplasma
Easy-to-evaluate approximate formulas are presented for the repelled-species current collected by a spherical body in a collisionless, magnetized plasma, valid over the full range of ratio of Larmor radius to sphere radius. The form is an appropriate average of the lower and upper bounds obtained by prior analytic arguments. This formulation enables rapid evaluation of the floating potential in...
متن کاملKinetic simulations of collisionless magnetic reconnection in presence of a guide field
The results of kinetic simulations of magnetic reconnection in Harris current sheets are analyzed. A range of guide fields is considered to study reconnection in plasmas characterized by different β values, β > me/mi. Both an implicit Particle-in-Cell (PIC) simulation method and a parallel explicit PIC code are used. Simulations with mass ratios up to the physical value are performed. The simul...
متن کاملThe Inner Structure of Collisionless Magnetic Reconnection
Magnetic reconnection is a driving engine of solar flares, stellar flares, and quite probably bursty events in high-energy astrophysical sites. The reconnection process is driven by a small-scale “dissipation region” surrounding the reconnection point (X-point), at which a plasma ideal condition breaks down. Recently, kinetic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations have revealed that the electron id...
متن کاملSimulations of plasma confinement in an antihydrogen trap
The three-dimensional particle-in-cell 3-D PIC simulation code WARP is used to study positron confinement in antihydrogen traps. The magnetic geometry is close to that of a UC Berkeley experiment conducted, with electrons, as part of the ALPHA collaboration W. Bertsche et al., AIP Conf. Proc. 796, 301 2005 . In order to trap antihydrogen atoms, multipole magnetic fields are added to a conventio...
متن کاملKinetic Vlasov Simulations of collisionless magnetic Reconnection
A fully kinetic Vlasov simulation of the Geospace Environment Modeling (GEM) Magnetic Reconnection Challenge is presented. Good agreement is found with previous kinetic simulations using particle in cell (PIC) codes, confirming both the PIC and the Vlasov code. In the latter the complete distribution functions fk (k = i, e) are discretised on a numerical grid in phase space. In contrast to PIC ...
